Our Produce

2011 Availability Calendar

In addition to being known for its citrus groves, Orange County has been the original Southern California center for strawberry production since the early 1930’s. The dry, mild coastal climate of OC is the perfect place to grow early season strawberries. Many old timers will remember some of the classic varieties that were bred locally at the University of California Agricultural Field Station in Irvine: Lassen, Sequoia, Tioga, Tufts, Chandlers, Douglass and more recently Camarosa, Ventana and Albion are varieties that year after year seek to improve upon their predecessors. Currently, OC Produce grows several of the latest varieties.

We begin our strawberry season in October by planting transplants that have been grown in nurseries near the Oregon Border. The plants have already entered into a dormant phase with the cold, frost filled nights at the high elevation nurseries up north. The strawberry plants are dug up out of the ground roots and all, washed and trimmed, placed in boxes and rushed down to Southern California.

We plant them by hand, one by one and the plant experiences the warmer ground and air temperature and is fooled into a springtime response. This triggers the plant to grow quickly and push blooms, even though it is Fall with Winter up ahead! We begin to see flowers throughout the fields in November and begin to pick the first fruits by Thanksgiving. The plant continues to grow and develop blossoms and fruit sets, and by New Year we are picking some of the most delicious and beautiful strawberries in the country. Our harvest season lasts from December until June and throughout that time, the plant continues to stay productive because of the mild coastal temperatures.

OC Produce offers strawberries that are grown sustainably using best management practices recommended by the California Strawberry Commission. We feature both Certified Organic and conventionally grown strawberries with same day delivery, and Farmers Market sales. Its like having a stand in your store! Orange County Produce…We Know Beans

In the 1950’s, the lima bean growing capital of the world was in Costa Mesa. This is not a surprising statistic since most beans grow best within a mild, Mediterranean microclimate. In fact, Orange County derives its famous name from the simple fact that this dynamic coastal plain is one of the best places on the planet to grow most any vegetable or fruit. The growers at Orange County Produce know this well and for three generations have been blessed with land, water and perfect weather to deliver a cornucopia of exceptional produce to discriminating Southern California buyers. And when it comes to growing fresh market beans, we’re the best!

For over 50 years, OC Produce has specialized in producing handpicked (not machine brutalized) Blue Lakes, Yellow Wax, Romano, Purple, Kentucky Wonder and other hard to find varieties of fresh market beans. We are able to deliver these delicious beans to farmers markets, stands and stores the same day of harvest. As part of Southern California’s sustainable food shed, our local grown products are the freshest in town. Both sustainable and Certified Organic supplies are available throughout the long growing season from May to November. When your shelves are filled with Orange County Harvest it’s like having a stand in your store!
